Representative Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas was the first member of Congress to volunteer for active duty after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Johnson was commissioned with the rank of lieutenant in the United States Navy and placed in command of a fact-finding mission in the Australian Combat Zone.
